So The Fader mag has started up a new series of warm-up mixes for the MoMA PS1 Warm Up in New York and I must say they are all superb. Check them all out on The Fader's soundcloud. first listen :: Rekchampa - 'Baby Cheesus'

[via]

Stefan aka Rekchampa (former DECKastee) gave us an exclusive new track of his to be premiered entitled, 'Baby Cheesus'. The bass clouding funky melody rides a 2-step beat that finds itself in a wonky atmosphere of its own. The sneaky synth takes on a downtempo dance rhythm that moves and grooves ever so swiftly. It's such a big tune and so banging beginning to end. Go check out all of his other recent tunes on his soundcloud after you download this one...

Sun Glitters x Halls - Swan / There

Sun Glitters and Halls team up together to fabricate an electrifying split EP entitled, Swan/There. Both artists remix each others tracks and showcase a new production of their own. Some very gratifying gems on here; dreamy ambiance that is entirely fitting for that go to morning music. Clocking in with spaced out ethereal synths and airy chapping ditties, it's showcases a consistent yet more experimental work from the two. Interesting sounds. DECKast #16 x Napolian

Ian Evans aka Napolian made a pop-cruising mix for this issue of our DECKast. Selecting tracks that push this new era of synth banging sounds including some of the finest in the game, Com Truise and Ford & Lopatin. Very nostalgic of the 80s and key heavy, Napolian lured in some of his current inspirations and likings of snazzy sounds. Turn this one up. Here's what he had to say about the mix...

"I've been promising Saish this mix for wayy too long. These are some of my favorite tracks right here, along with some of my music soon to be released on the Beer On The Rug label. Play this one loud, and turn ur subs up."

Main Attrakionz - 'Diamond of God' (prod. by Squadda B)

Lo-fi dreaming rap duo, Main Attrakionz, released their much buzzed about, 808s & Dark Grapes II, on Mishka NYC recently. The eloped tape includes production from a fine grip of chill instrumentalists including a track produced by the great, Clams Casino. 'Diamond of God' (prod. by Squadda B) is definitely one of my favorites off this one. So uplifting and based, I just can't get enough of it. Download and stream the rest of the album on Mishka's bandcamp.

Beat Connection - 'In the Water'

Seattle duo, Beat Connection, dropped their EP, Surf Noir, earlier this year through Tender Age, and I must say this is a perfect listen to ease those summer-end feelings. The EP's star track, 'In the Water', takes on this blissful pop front that pumps you up, let's you loose, and make you feel like your "In the Water" literally. Such a summer gem; almost reminds me of Cut Copy. Poppy synth-wave goodness. Stream the whole EP on their soundcloud and purchase it here.

Nvthlss - Choses d'été

David aka Nvthlss (previous DECKastee) asked me to create the cover for his new beat tape, Choses d'été (Things of Summer), and the outcome is what you see above. So many beautiful beats on this one. Perfect for those summer setting days, and those coach lounging nights. Colorful upbeat get-downs all the way from Paris and french hip-hop beats for the win. This is really some special stuff here...

Elan Vital - 'October 13, 2008'

[via]

With an immediate sound very simialr to that of The Field's; this track by Sleeping Firends new solo man, Elan Vital, stretches its repetitive cycles and takes on this melodic seizure, that is constant and overwhelmingly persistent throughout. It's a relaxing treat to the ears, letting the eyes roll back and the head tilt. I have been on this alot this past summer, only this song in particular though. Knxwledge - '(Hell∆)Pretentious'

Knxwledge has been putting out new material left and right recently and one of them that really got me going is his new and worthy, Komposure.EP. The 8 track preliminarily beat-down whoo hah strikes with chapping thumps and jumps, as well as his uncanny instrument/sample compostions. In, '(Hell∆)Prententious', he takes Bibio's, 'Pretentious', and throws it in to a salad of color toning first class beats alongside a dressing of cool feel-good sensations. Super cool beat rework. Lauren Halo - 'Constant Index' (Actress Violet Remix)

I've had this Actress remix of Lauren Halo's track, 'Constant Index', for a while now in my iTunes and somehow I really over looked this one. Actress is a mystical genius with all of his remixes, let alone his original compostions. He finds a way lure in these minimal and highly experimental crackles, pops, and industrial sounding hubbubs into his tracks. Each one almost sounding like a sparing lo-fi pumping machine. His remix of Lauren's, 'Constant Index', begins with an unceasing guitar drone that immediately creates a divergent almost uncomfortable atmosphere on the ears. It slowly moves into a spacious psychedelic-funk themed beat, full of low pitched shhs and shahs simmering beneath the layered samples the song originally began with. Darren Cunningham you are an inspiration.

Ifan Dafydd - 'No Good'

The much buzzed about, Ifan Dafydd, is said to be an alias of James Blake, but in fact is not so true. He's just a Welsh producer making some incredible sounds similar to that of James. Rumors have it that the two of them are friends, but who really knows, all I know is that this guy is making some really really great stuff. His debut release features two tracks, 'No Good'/'Miranda', both are very reminiscent of James', CMYK EP, its almost like it's part II. 'No Good' takes Amy Winehouse's, 'You Know I'm No Good', and chops it into a mind drilling too good melody that moves and grooves ever so swiftly with post-r&b synths, clicks, and claps. Such a big tune. It is now out on the Not On Label and you can purchase the brilliant 12" over here.

New York based R & B reworker, Rimar, curated a wonderul mix for this issue of our DECKast. Hip-hopping summer jamming tunes, all compiled into an eccentric midnight 40min sex mix. Definitely different from any other DECKast we've had; its a compilation of numbers that is compatible for all. It's too damn hot. Here's his short blurb about the mix...

album :: Shlohmo - Bad Vibes

There's much to say about Shlohmo's new experiment, Bad Vibes, it has this groove to it that is just so outstanding beginning to end. From soothing broken-beat clicks and claps to chirping chimes of birds and droplet sounding clinks, it has this lasting impression that just sticks to mind really well. The whole composition has this certain vibe to it that is certainly not bad but different from what we've heard from the SF beat fiend in the past. He takes a more experimental and melodic approach on this one, upping the reverb and drone with his striking hums, grunts, and moans. The album lifts off with the ethereal track, 'Big Feelings', and boy did this one catch me by surprise. So soulful and passionate, taking this simple indian raga sounding beat and turning into a meditative opus of freeness that makes you think and reflect upon its incredibly moving droned out tones and textures. A little further into the album you have, 'It Was Whatever', a mellow composition of refrained droned out acoustics and a stunning bass breakdown of this guttered broken-bell beat that's rhythm is so obscure yet pleasing. It brings in a whole other dimension and side to Shlohmo's sound I didn't even know was existent. The entirety of this whole release is really something great, its slow-moving, easy on the ears, mind, body, and soul. Super chill vibes. Lovin this new sound of his, its matured and produced. Good things coming for this guy. The album is now out worldwide on the Friends of Friends label, purchase it over here or on iTunes.

Nicolas Jaar, Clown and Sunset label founder, treated the worldwide web with some new material on his label's soundcloud with some of his very own 'Bluewave Edits'. There's three of them and each are a hit, almost somewhat genius. 'What My Last Girl Put Me Through', was first introduced to me on Nicolas's XLR8R Podacst mix and for a while, it was a segment that I repeated constantly. Now its officially a realease! Such a soothing and soulful unwind of a groove that is so nostalgic of past times and raw with its intricate drumset patterns, creating a head-swaying number and absolutely great rework of the original. Skeleton Zoo - The Busride EP

Sample-beased electronic duo, Skeleton Zoo left me a treat in my inbox this morning, called the, The Busride EP. The skittering 8-track debut has some spaced out collages of sample-based electronic sounding beats that swift and swoosh chaotically on each number. It has this abstract sensation to it that finds its way to be most audible in these guys' sound. Some real interesting sound structures coming from this whole piece, its like an instrumental orchestrated soundtrack. Mysteriously cool stuff in all. Download and stream below...

DECKast #14 x Nvthlss

Directly from Paris, David aka Nvthlss, made a mix for this issue of our DECKast. He carefully selected a few of his currently preferred feel-good artists and cooked up an opus of some ever so laid-back hip-hop vibin' tunes. Succulent to the ear drums from beginning to end, all 35 minutes of it. It's continuous momentum of utterly unwinding kickback beats that can easily make it one to be repeated over and over again. Here's his rather lengthy explanation yet about the mix...

"J&D tout est pour le mieux: it's a beat that i made with my "brother" J, the voice of billy paul ...this beat is really special for me
then there's this sa-ra joint , it's my favourite, the beat is crazy and the voice too; SA RA is really dope so i couldn't do a mix without them; and then we have the daru and rena song, this song is really special to me because of the sample: return of the crooklyn dodgers which is, by far, my favourite hip hop song, and rena's voice....then we have the melo-x joint, i remember that the first time i listened to it, i was really amazed; and then we have the jneiro jarel joint: breathin, which is marvellous, i bought the album and i remember i didn't know nothing about jneiro jarel as a beatmaker and after the first listening, it was this joint that i repeated the most; then there is conversation with her; and then we have the cody chesnutt song: boylife in america ... this joint is so crazy; the voice of cody , i discovered him thanks to the dave chapelle movie and i bought his first album which blew me away; i think it's one of the voice that i love the most and this album ... the atmosphere, the context of the recording, such a beautiful song; then we have the d'angelo joint: the root, on the voodoo album, it's my favourite song of d'angelo which is my favourite artist, i listen to him all the time and voodoo is one of these albums that is really important for music; then the mos def joint on his second album which is one of his best albums no matter what people seems to think; this is not my favourite track on the album (modern marvel) but on this song the beat is raw and that's what i liked; then there is D' , and then we have mos def with revelations... love that beat, just that, and the mix comes to an end with the slum village joint which is a classic, j dilla!

Warm Thighs - WARM THIGHS

Brighton's SP404 beatmaker, Warm Thighs aka _lip, recently updated his bandcamp with a new project under the name, Warm Thighs. The fairly short 6 track release ranges from uplifting lo-fi vinyl rips to woozy mantra binding slaps and booms. They are scenic jams for the mind body and soul that receive instant gratification. Even though the cover art for this is pretty scary at first glance the beats will make up for it by all means. If you really like what you hear on this one, be sure to check out all of his other cool releases on bandcamp.

Neon Indian - 'Fallout'

The 2009 album, Psychic Chasms, was a summer gem—it was infectious, druggy, and nostalgic. Not only that, but Psychic Chasms anchored part of a recent movement—along with Memory Tapes, Washed Out, and Toro Y Moi—called chillwave. Now, two years later, the sun-bleached artist returns with “Fallout”, another acid-drenched tune that summons the same summery spark Psychic Chasms had.

Bjork - 'Crystalline' (Omar Souleyman Remix)

Syrian pop producer, Omar Souleyman, takes three tracks off Bjork's upcoming album to create his very own, Crystalline Series. Words cannot even explain how excited I am for this album, and when this remix was heard, I became even more ecstatic. Souleyman definitely did some genius work on all three of her tracks but his 'Crystalline' remix is by all means has come to be my favorite. It's a groovy middle eastern belly-dancing cadence that just never seems to end. So intricately poppy and can potentially get people dancing on the dancefloor across the world. Purchase his whole series of remixes over here.

Nvthlss - 'Lyhm'

[via]

Parisian beatmaker, Nvthlss, recently showed off some of his beats to me, and I'm so very glad he did. Such tremendously feel-good beats. David's most recent upload on his soundcloud, 'Lyhm', clocks in at almost a 1:15min as a symphonic beat refrain that emits a head-bopping rhythm in an unlikely time frame, riding a smooth tide of its own. It's really too great for it's short length. He also released his debut self titled mixtape late last month on his bandcamp and the whole thing is up for free! It's definitely safe to say that Nvthlss is my favorite French beatsmith at the moment. Just stream and download below and you'll see what I mean...

Video :: I Break Horses - 'Hearts'

I Break Horses - Hearts from Bella Union on Vimeo.

Right from the get go, a thumping, muted heartbeat sets the electricity of “Hearts”. An immediate thought that comes to mind is, “Ok, what kind of journey am I going to go on?” The heartbeat is loud and prominent, which makes listeners alert. A profuse guitar is then introduced, along with hushed whispers. And then, a dissonant guitar emerges, reminding me of the same tension I have when I listen to My Bloody Valentine. The occurring theme that is noticed is melody vs. noise. Maria Linden’s voice is soft, delicate, and ethereal. At the same time, a glass-shattering buzz is rooted deep in this song. All this increases throughout the song, only making it create more tension. Right when you think “Hearts” is going break through and explode with an ear-bursting bang, the song quickly evaporates and leaves you thinking, “Wow, that was some journey.”

Sleep ∞ Over - 'Romantic Streams'

Sleep ∞ Over began as a project that started out with a few rough demos recorded live on a handheld tape recorder, but quickly turned their low-budget project that reluctantly stapled their sound as a seductive dream-pop band. Anticipation grows with every new release Sleep ∞ Over have put out within the past year. And it’s no surprise that this group have surpassed my expectations by how they have pushed their way out of their comfort zone. “Romantic Streams” reminds me not only of their first raw demos they released, but to how they have expanded their sound in order to fill the room with more liveliness and depth, and at the same time keep the intimacy that induced feelings of loneliness and emptiness. The same feeling is there in “Romantic Streams”, however, they have now added 80’s Casio synth loops to make this project into a band capable of growing and understanding how they can explore new territories without losing what they began with.

Relistening :: Shafiq Husayn - En'-A-Free-Ka EP [2009]

Earlier this month I stumbled upon this EP released back in 2009 entitled, En'-A-Free-Ka, by L.A.'s free spirit, Shafiq Husayn. Husayn has done works with Flying Lotus, Erykah Badu, Bilal, and Jay Electronica to say the least; so when it comes to making music without boundaries, he by all means is not a stranger. The 7-track EP falls into a beautifully spacious atmosphere of limitless content and structure that is ever so indulging and brilliant. Flying Lotus' remix of Husayn's, 'Evil Man', has galloping basslines that subdue themselves into a mind-bending cathedral of galactic star ringers and peculiar time frames that are just out of this world. FlyLo takes it up, up, and away; far from the original. The EP's middle track, 'Jungle Booking', moves and grooves with broken jazzy ditties and randomly spoken samples from around the world showcasing a universal medium of all sound. It's just too good. Purchase and stream the whole EP over at the Plug Research label.

One Year of Spontaneous Rhythm

John Howes' Spontaneous Rhythm label drops a short compilation enclosing selected tracks from their artists releases this past year. Some really pristine and ground-breaking sounds coming from this label, bringing in some of the first of it's kind. Divine Interface aka Drew made a track especially for this release entitled, 'Cancellations', and by all means pans out to be one of my favorites by him. Its a sensational bass changer and click muncher for your ears, too good. Check out the whole talented crew on their bandcamp and download the whole release below...
