album :: Bibio - Mind Bokeh

Bibio is to release his 2nd album entitled, Mind Bokeh, on Warp Records, March 28th. The album explores chimey reverbed textures that are in syncopation with glitched-out and funked out beats that make the mind-churn and kick the ear drums into a euphoric ease. Consistent throughout, each track off the record showcases immediate captivation in its melodies making it very easy to repeat and keep on heavy rotation. Beginning with the utterly alluring track, 'Excuses' and ending with a color-filled sanctum of repeated sounds, 'Saint Christopher', this album surely is the best i've heard from the man, Bibio.

DECKast #5

There’s usually a meaning behind songs that we hear whether or not we know the actual intent of a song’s originality. The process of hearing a song, letting it settle in and analyzing it is different amongst everyone and that is what is so fascinating in how we perceive music. To me, these songs represent more than just something that I listen to, they are songs that lie with me on an interpersonal level that reflect emotions that words cannot fulfill.

Medicine Hat - 'Long Time Comin'

Ned Sasi aka Medicine Hat of Ann Arbor, drops a soulful dance banger on his soundcloud. Its been a 'Long Time Comin' since I heard something that completely made me loose track of time and had me as if I was top of the world; this song did exactly that. Upbeat glitch synth rifts, chopped up Star Slinger sounding samples, and down tempo breaks that add that extra uumph. Listen for yourself...

Zoo Kid // Bandcamp Singles

South East London's, 17 yr old, Archy Marshall aka Zoo Kid, is staggering. He uses his awe-inspiring vocals and in a way that is so very soothing to the ears, it resonates sounds of bliss through my speakers. With his psychobilly rhythms and acoustically dub ditties he takes and makes a style of his own. All of his tracks are available to listen on his bandcamp but not download. So I went ahead and put together a compilation of all his stirring bandcamp singles into a zip, dl below...

Ghostpoet - 'Us Against Whatever Ever'

UK's, Ghostpoet recently released his album, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam, on Brownswood Recordings. Matthewdavid - 'International ft. Dog Bite'

This track was released earlier this month and it has just lodged in my music library for some time now un-played. Finally gave it a good listen and I can't stop listening. Matthewdavid and Dog Bite fabricate a lucid lackadaisical bass filled head-bopper. Chimey melodies and reverby vocals, can't go wrong with this one. Instant feel good track.

Throwback Tuesday :: Grizzly Bear - Colorado

Prior to Merriweather Post Pavillion’s release in 2009, the Animal Collective members had there own separate opinion of which song they wanted to conclude the album with. The debate was whether or not they wanted to end with a bang or a traditional closure. With them finally agreeing to end the album with a bang, it was concluded that Merriweather Post Paviliion was to reach the finish line with the in-your-face, confounded “Brother Sport.” Much like Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion, Grizzly Bear’s closure,“Colorado,” also ends with a boom. “Colorado” departs the listeners with an ominous sound that gradually transcends into a vociferous tune that inconspicuously diminishes into nothing more than a bass riff that leaves you hanging, confused and wanting more. To me, “Colorado” is the spotlight of Yellow House that portrays Ed Droste’s haunting voice, Chris Bear’s jazzy sway, Daniel Rossen’s clamorous guitar strikes, and Chris Taylor’s essential use of woodwind instruments. The song just doesn’t end with a bang, but leaves you with one question: Who the hell are these guys?

Album :: Young Henry - Octagon

Minneapolis', Young Henry, released his album, Octagon, earlier this year on Zoom Lens. The synths are in high key, the lo-fi is heavy, and the Korean/Japanese vocals are on point. The album experiments unruly beats with droney bass frequencies that dive into a sanctum of euphoric Korean & Janpanese pop; it really is an extraordinary production. Download and support the album for free on his bandcamp.

DECKast #4 x 1990

The underrated, 1990, was generous enough to curate a toneful mixtape for DECKast #4, featuring his current listens. Moses' (aka 1990) track selection is really on point; it comprises a fluctuation of genres that seemingly helped influence and produce the founding basis of his music. The 10 track compilation showcases heavy glitch-hopped textures and hazed out beats from Brothertiger, Paul White, and Heralds of Change; just to name a few. Next level chillwave material. Indulge yourself...

Relistening :: Quiet Village - Silent Movie [2008]

Classical instrumentalists, Quiet Village released their utterly moving album, Silent Movie, back in 2008. Since then it has become an absolute favorite of mine. The album showcases classic serene textures and stirring melodies that dip you in a daydream of mountain landscapes and meditative forests, making it perfect to listen to at anytime of day. With echoed reverby tones and psychedelic drum rifts, this 'silent moive' is definitely something worth being heard. Below are a couple of my favorites off the album, which is available for download in full length HERE.

Quiet Village - Victoria's Secret
Quiet Village - Free Rider
Quiet VIllage - Too High To Move

Ghibli - Hollywood Snow

In recent news, the Brooklyn experimental band, TV on the Radio, announced an end to their hiatus and revealed that they will be releasing their new album, Nine Types of Light, in May. With groovy guitar riffs, elaborate drumming, cacophonous trumpets blustering through the end of the song and Malone’s diverse range of vocals, “Crying” embodies intricate instrumentation that collectively harmonize without having one instrument overwhelm another.

Gil Scott-Heron & Jaimie xx - 'NY is Killing Me'

Jaimie xx reworks Gil Scott-Heron's recently released album, I'm New here into a eclectic masterpiece entitled, We're New Here. Such an unexpected duo to do something but it definitely worked. The album is full of future bass melodies intertwined into the broken vocals of Gil Scott, creating a haven of pure and great sounds. Don't sleep on this one, it's really great.

Amen Ra - 'Candy Rain'

Amen Ra of the LHF Collective, recently did a split EP with Double Helix, entitled, EP2: The Line Path, on Keysound Recordings. The EP explores dark rhythmical textures and showcases the pure joy of the post-dubstep genre. Amen Ra's track, 'Candy Rain', on the EP, has a definite west coast L.A. vibe to it. The track is layered with down-tempo, head bopping, wobbly, and dubby beats; creating a sensational rhythm that puts the mind at ease.

PEPEPIANO - 'Bruce Springsteen'

PEPEPIANO recently drops his debut self titled album, PEPEPIANO. His bedroom pop vibe is what really makes his sound so stimulating and likable. Niclolas Jaar has been making electronic sounds since the age of 14, with a few EPs and remixes released, he is finally to release his debut album, Space Is Only Noise, on Circus Company. This album is truly a masterpiece of subtle yet complex electronic rhythms and melodies. They undertake a lengthy subdued mysteriousness that stays consist throughout each track of the album; creating a perplexing attraction towards his expressive sounds.
